It’s a short climb down a cement staircase to get to creek bed at the base of Looking Glass Falls, but if you’re not up to it, the view is just as stunning from above.

Imagine spending Mother’s Day surrounded by the serene beauty of mountain waterfalls. We’ve handpicked a variety of cascades, starting with the most accessible ones. A brief climb down the stairs takes you to the base, but even roadside, the view is magnificent.

Sunburst Falls is one of many waterfalls in Pisgah Forest that are never as busy as Looking Glass. However you may have to settle for an obstructed view. The road runs right over the falls, so it takes some work to get a good view. The road has a clear view of the upper half, however.

Nearby, Sunburst Falls awaits, offering a glimpse of its splendor with minimal climbing. Though the full view requires a bit of effort, the upper cascade is visible from the road. And while you’re at Pisgah, you’ll find plentiful spots for a nice picnic. Some within earshot of the flowing river, others in convenient recreation areas.

Unfortunately you can’t make your way to the base of the falls anymore, but you still get a stunning view from the viewing platform above.

Issaqueena Falls on the other hand boasts a brief, flat walk to a viewing platform. While the path to the base of the cascade is closed, but that might be a good thing because it was a treacherous path due being really steep and very slippery at times. But the view of Issaqueena Falls from above is still breathtaking. Plus, it’s adjacent to Stumphouse Tunnel, offering two attractions in one visit. With picnic tables and restrooms, it’s an ideal spot for an afternoon of exploration.
