Lake Russell is a Wilderness Close to Home

Not far from Calhoun Falls, you’ll find one of South Carolina’s hidden gems. Lake Russell sits on the South Carolina – Georgia state line between Lakes Hartwell and Thurmond. Although Lake Russell sits between right her better known sisters with their speedboats and constant activity, standing along her banks, you’ll feel miles away from any sign of civilization.

Designated as a conservation lake by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Russell remains largely undeveloped. The Corps maintains a 300 ft buffer around the shoreline where private development is restricted. The only signs of civilization you’ll see are parks and access points along the 540 miles of shore, including State Parks in both SC and GA.

The unspoiled nature of Lake Russell makes it one of the best spots in South Carolina for fresh water fishing. As you sit in your boat or even stand along the shore, you may get the sensation that you’re fishing in a far away wilderness. But instead of being isolated and largely inaccessible, Lake Russell is just a short drive form all the comforts of civilization like hot water, clean sheets, and room service.

The lake is littered with fallen trees and underwater structures that make perfect habitats for game fish. In fact, Lake Russell has been the site for many record catches over the years. Cold waters are released into the lakel from the Hartwell Dam upstream, so you get the perfect environment for cold and cool water fish. The Savanna River transitions into a one mile trailrace leading from the dam. These cold water streams are stocked with over 30,000 trout a year, so bank fishing is sure to provide you with a great dinner. If you’re after other game fish, largemouth and striped bass, bream, crappies, and catfish are all found in abundance.

But Lake Russell isn’t just about fishing. The state parks on both sides of the lake offer camping for both RV’s and tents. Swimming areas and picnic shelters in the parks make Lake Russell a great spot for a family outing. Nature explorers will find plenty to do too. Hiking, biking, and horseback trails crisscross the 500 miles of shoreline.

State Parks along the lake include Calhoun Falls State Park and MT. Carmel Park in South Carolina, as well as the Richard Russell State Park and Bobby Brown Outdoor Recreation area in Georgia. Numerous small parks and boat put ins are also locate around the lake. Russell Dam is located on the south end of the lake and is an impressive sight.

Located in southern Anderson and Abbeville counties in South Carolina and Elbert County in Georgia, Lake Russell offers something for the whole family.
